Liu Yunshan visits CGN booth at nuclear energy exhibition

2017-09-18

Liu Yunshan, China's top publicity official and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee visited the booth of China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) at the exhibition of green nuclear energy in Beijing on Sept 17.

Vice Premier Liu Yandong, head of the CPC Central Committee's Publicity Department Liu Qibao, Vice-President Li Yuanchao and Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang also attended the exhibition.

They stopped at a simulated main control room for the country's homegrown third generation Hualong One reactor and were given an introduction on of the third generation reactor by CGN President Zhang Shanming.

According to Zhang, the Hualong One reactor boasts higher safety performance than previous models, since it adopts an emergency shutdown system combining active and passive features.

The main control room, nicknamed the “brain” of a nuclear power plant (NPP), enables the operator to monitor and control the NPP under different operational conditions and ensures the safe and effective operation of the plant.

Liu was invited to press a simulated button for connection to the power grid, which showed the simulated process of power generation and connection to the power grid of the Unit 3 of Fangchenggang NPP, a Hualong One demonstration project in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

After watching the animated video illustrating the operation of the main control room, Liu inquired about the progress of the demonstration project and the localization rate of major equipment.

The construction of Hualong One demonstration unit will take about 62 months, up to the world's advanced level,” Zhang said, adding that the localization rate has reached 86.7 percent.

The exhibition, which will last one month, aims to publicize nuclear knowledge and promote green development.

Besides the main control room model, CGN is also displaying its ACPR50S offshore small modular reactor at the event.
