The project achievement of inactivating novel coronavirus in cold chain foodpackaging with electronbeam has passed the review

On March 29, CGN jointly held a project achievement conference in Shenzhen with the Institute of Nuclear Energy and New Energy Technology and Medical College of Tsinghua University, Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Shenzhen National Infectious Disease Clinical Medical Research Center and Shenzhen Third People's Hospital.  It was announced that the results of the project achievement of Inactivating Novel Coronavirus in Cold Chain Food Packaging with Electron Beam (hereinafter referred to as the Inactivating Novel Coronavirus with Electron Beam) were reviewed by seven experts, including Mr. Zhan Wenlong, Academician of CAS, and completed the development of the first set of demonstration application device for disinfection of cold chain food outer packaging in China.

The expert group of the review meeting consisted of seven experts, including Mr. Zhan Wenlong and Zhao Hongwei, Academician of CAS, Mr. Zhang Liubo, chief expert of Disinfection of China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Mr. Lin Lifeng, deputy director of China Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Mr. Ma Lan, biomedical expert, from Guangdong Center for Disease Control and Prevention,  Professor Ha Yiming of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Professor Ma Hui, from Tsinghua University. At the site of the review meeting, after full inquiry, on-site oral defense and research discussion, the expert group was of the opinion that: the project had made rapid response to the requirements of comprehensive preventive disinfection of imported cold chain food, and took the lead in conducting the experiment of electron beam inactivation of Novel Coronavirus in P3 Laboratory, which verified the advantages of the effectiveness and penetration depth control of electron beam inactivated Novel Coronavirus. The project fully took into account the impact of cold chain environmental factors on the electron beam inactivated Novel Coronavirus, provided scientific basis for the development of new technology of preventive disinfection of cold chain food outer packaging, marking that the research and application technology of low energy electron beam inactivation Novel Coronavirus in China is in the forefront of the world. In order to solve the problem of Novel Coronavirus pollution in cold chain food packaging, the project has put forward the technology scheme of electron beam disinfection, which is applied in many technical innovation applications, such as the application of low energy electron curtain accelerator, self-shielding system and design of beam transmission system. The overall realization of the equipment does not affect the safety of food and operators, and has better cold chain food treatment efficiency and inactivation effect. The review team suggested that the application site should be installed as soon as possible for demonstration, further forming products for speeding up this application, and applying electron beam disinfection technology to the inactivation of Novel Coronavirus of other goods.

Mr. Gao Hongbin from China Atomic Energy Authority, Mr. Meng Xianfei from Tsinghua University, Mr. Long Maoxiong from China Nuclear Energy Association, Mrs. Guo Lili from China Isotope and Radiation Industry Association, Mr. Xia Junjie from Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Mr. Shan Youliang from Shenzhen Market Supervision Administration, Mr. Wang Suichu from Shenzhen Airport (Group) Co., Ltd., and Mr. Pang Songtao from CGN attended the review meeting.

Since June 2020, there have been a number of positive cases of COVID-19 from imported cold chain food packaging or environment in China, which has brought severe challenges to the domestic epidemic prevention and control work of prevention of imported cases externally and prevention of resurging cases internally. In order to implement the important directive spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's Technology Epidemic Prevention, coping with risks to China's security and prevention and control situation brought by the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia overseas, strengthen the Epidemic Prevention and Control System of prevention and control of imported cases externally, prevention and control of resurging cases internallyand prevention and control of people and things together, explore new technologies for the prevention and control of major epidemics, and under the guidance and support of the China Atomic Energy Authority, on October 30, 2020, CGN Nuclear Technology Development Co., Ltd., (hereinafter referred to as CGN Technology), united the Institute of Nuclear Energy and New Energy Technology and Medical College of Tsinghua University, Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen National Infectious Disease Clinical Medical Research Center and Shenzhen Third People's Hospital, started scientific research project of Inactivating Novel Coronavirus with Electron Beam.  In December 2020, the project research team carried out the inactivation experiment of recombination of Novel Coronavirus, and achieved preliminary experimental results. On January 10, 2021, the project research team officially carried out the first batch of experiments of killing Novel Coronavirus with electron beam in P3 Laboratory in Shenzhen Third People's Hospital. Up to March 10, 2021, after validation experiments of 11 batches and 190 samples, the research team has fully mastered the method of electron beam inactivation of Novel Coronavirus, as well as the inactivation effect data under the influence of different virus titer, carrier media and absorbed doses. The results showed that the Novel Coronavirus on the surface of filter paper could be completely killed by the absorbed dose of 5-10FGy electron beam, and the Novel Coronavirus was not positive after three generations of blind transmission, which fully verified the inactivation effect of electron beam on the Novel Coronavirus.


Start-up field simulation experiment of the first cold chain food packaging electron beam disinfection equipment prototype


The project research team has developed the first set of self-shielding electronic curtain accelerator equipment for inactivating the Novel Coronavirus in the outer packaging of cold chain food based on the experimental results and the actual situation of the preventive disinfection of imported cold chain food in Shenzhen. The equipment prototype has been installed and commissioned in the factory on March 14, and the field simulation experiment has been completed. The complete set of demonstration device is ready for installation and commissioning at the end of March.

As a leading demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Shenzhen has established the import freezing concentrate supervision warehouse mode for the domestic initiative in China, and made outstanding contributions to prevent the imported cases of Novel Coronavirus. After the review meeting ended on the same day, the relevant competent departments of Shenzhen also signed a letter of intent with CGN Technology to support and jointly explore and promote the first set of equipment of electron beam inactivation of Novel Coronavirus technology in the cold chain outer packaging disinfection.

Mr. Wang Jianlong, vice president of Institute of Nuclear Energy and New Energy Technology of Tsinghua University, introduced the principle of electron beam inactivation of Novel Coronavirus. Through the direct action of electron beam generated by electron accelerator and the indirect action of oxidation-reduction of active particles such as hydroxyl radical (- OH) and reductive hydrated electron (EAQ-) generated by water molecules excited by the electron beam, it will destroy DNA or RNA molecules and protein envelope in microorganisms including Novel Coronavirus, so as to achieve the effect of disinfection and sterilization.

In November 2020, CGN and Institute of Nuclear Energy and New Energy Technology of Tsinghua University jointly built and put into operation the first domestic project of electron beam treatment of medical wastewater - Hubei Shiyan Xiyuan Hospital Project, which has proved that electron beam has good inactivation effect on pathogenic microorganisms and viruses in wastewater, and can completely realize the degradation of antibiotics. At the same time, for microorganisms including Novel Coronavirus, electron beam has the advantages of fast inactivation speed, high efficiency and good effect. The inactivation effect is not affected by environmental temperature, and has no pollution, no residue, and does not affect food safety. It can effectively solve the technical defects of traditional treatment methods and improve the treatment effect.

Mr. Zhang Zimin, director of the Electron Accelerator Research Center of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief engineer of the CGN Accelerator Research Institute, said that the developed inactivation device uses a low-energy self-shielded electron curtain accelerator, with low electron beam energy and only about 0.3 millimetre penetration ability to paper products. It is mainly aimed at the disinfection of cold chain food packaging and will not penetrate the cold chain food packaging.  It will not affect the food in the packing box, nor the environment of the equipment operation site. At the same time, the equipment covers an area of no more than 40 square meters. According to the actual situation of the existing cold chain food packaging disinfection, the equipment can be directly deployed to the customs, ports, centralized supervision warehouses and other places to achieve seamless docking with the cold chain transportation and storage, providing a more green, environmental protection and efficient solution for the cold chain packaging disinfection, It can become a excellent methodfor domestic epidemic prevention and control.

Mr. Liu Lei, Director of Shenzhen National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Shenzhen Third People's Hospital, believes that China has made outstanding achievements in the research of Novel Coronavirus vaccine (prevention) and antibody (treatment), and the technical achievements and application of this project will implement human and material co-preventionin China, It is of great significance to provide better solutions for cutting off the transmission route of Novel Coronavirus!

For the results of the project, Mr. Yang Changli said that since the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus, CGN has actively implemented the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important instructions and the decision and deployment of CPC Central Committee and State Council, so as to ensure the stable supply of electricity, and exert the scientific and technological strength to help prevent and control the epidemic. Electron beam technology has played an important role in disinfection and sterilization of epidemic prevention materials, making up the short board of medical sewage and solid waste treatment. The success of the project of Novel Coronavirus inactivation with electron beam will make a new contribution to cutting off the epidemic transmission route of cold chain outer packaging in China.
