CGN's Largest-Capacity Wind Turbine Unit Completed Hoisting

On June 2, the first 18 MW ultra-large offshore wind turbine of the CGN Guangdong Yangjiang Fanshi II 1 GW Offshore Wind Power Project was successfully hoisted. Once completed, the project will realize the large-scale application of 18 MW-class offshore wind turbines in China, effectively accelerating the high-quality development of the domestic offshore wind power industry toward larger capacity, higher efficiency, and lower cost.

The 18 MW ultra-large offshore wind turbine hoisted this time features the largest single-unit capacity among all CGN projects currently under construction or in operation. The rotor diameter reaches 292 meters, with each blade spanning 143 meters in length. The total swept area is approximately 66,000 square meters, roughly equivalent to the size of 9 standard football fields. Under full-load operating conditions, the rotor generates approximately 43 kilowatt-hours per revolution, meeting the daily electricity consumption of one ordinary household for 9 consecutive days. The annual power generation of a single unit can reach 56 million kilowatt-hours, equivalent to saving approximately 16,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 43,000 tons.

The total hoisting weight of the complete wind turbine exceeds 1,500 tons, equivalent to the total weight of 1,000 family cars; the nacelle alone weighs 473 tons, and the hub center height reaches 171.9 meters, approximately equal to the height of a 57-story residential building. The hoisting construction faced technical challenges such as heavy-tonnage loads, ultra-high center of gravity, and complex sea conditions: the ultra-large rotor hoisting involved a large hoisting radius and high difficulty in attitude control, setting millimeter-level stringent requirements for installation precision. The construction site is located in the open sea area, characterized by perennial strong winds, surging currents, variable flows, and complex meteorological conditions, which posed extremely high requirements for the positioning accuracy of hoisting vessels, coordinated equipment operation capability, and the on-site safety management and control system.

"To ensure a one-time successful hoisting operation, we took the lead in coordinating all participating units, fine-tuned the specialized construction plan based on marine hydrology and meteorological data, and overcame several core technical challenges, including in-air attitude stability of ultra-long blades, precise alignment of ultra-large heavy components, and coordinated equipment operation under complex sea conditions," said Chen Jun, project manager of the Yangjiang Fanshi II Offshore Wind Power Project Department of CGN New Energy Guangdong Company. Throughout the construction process, all units worked in close coordination, rigorously implemented the standardized work safety management and control system, and precisely completed the hoisting and connection of core components—including the nacelle, hub, and blades—ultimately achieving one-time positioning and successful installation.

As a key green energy infrastructure project in Guangdong Province, the project has a total installed capacity of 1 GW, with 25 16.2 MW and 33 18 MW offshore wind turbine generators planned for installation. Once put into operation, the project will continuously supply clean renewable electricity, effectively optimize the regional energy consumption structure, assist Guangdong in building a new-type power system, and provide a solid guarantee for local industrial upgrading and green, high-quality development. Looking ahead, CGN New Energy will continue to advance project construction to high standards, striving to complete the project and bring it into power generation at the earliest possible date.
